Funeral directors have been an important part of facilitating the gift of sight through eye donation for more than 30 years! Trained Minnesota funeral directors began removing eyes for the eye bank in 1974, and some funeral directors in greater Minnesota still serve as volunteer eye recovery technicians.
Statutes require funeral directors and donation agencies to work together to carry out donation prior to embalming. Eye, tissue, and organ donation agencies collaborate to make shared donation cases go as smoothly and as quickly as possible.
